Two and a half thousand years ago, the Greek physician Hippocrates (him of the oath) came across a patient with unusual tumour, described as a 'muddled irritable cavity with spindly legs flaring out of control in all directions'. Fascinated by its evil animal-like appearance Hippocrates called it karkinoma, the Greek for crab and root of one of the scariest words in our modern vocabulary, CANCER.
And in this fascinating new collaboration between German-born artist Vera Klute and Irish artist Kate Minnock, the relationship between another doctor and the deadly disease becomes the unlikely centre piece of a highly creative and inspirational exhibition.
Based upon Minnock's previous research-based work, the show draws on the work of Dr. Angel H. Roffo, who presented his groundbreaking studies into the cancer-causing effects of solar radiation at the 2nd International Congress of Scientific and Social Campaign Against Cancer in 1936.
Merging Minnock's affinity for site-specific installation and digital & Fine Art print & drawing with Klute's love of drawing, video, stills and photography, this sensational showcase features a remarkable animation based on Roffo's detailed drawings and a fantastic limited edition artist's book highlighting significant events relating to Roffo's research.
So for a remarkable exhibition that's sure to enthral and enlighten in equal measure - don't miss Karkinoma at thisisnotashop from 2nd - 12th October.
