From 26th September - 1st November, visual arts duo Operating Theatre (Olwen Fouere and Roger Doyle) and master cinematographer Christopher Doyle present the premiere of their new cinematic installation Here Lies in Film ..., a reworking of Operating Theatre's originally account of one man's descent from greatness to disrepute.
In 1937, Antonin Artaud had what he believe to be a terrifying apocalyptic premonition. Spurred on by this vision, the influential playwright, poet, actor and director travelled to Ireland on a quest to find the final resting place of St Patrick's knotted wood staff! He journeyed from Galway to the Aran Island and on to Dublin, leaving a trail of unpaid bills and mounting debts as he went. Eventually, the law caught up with him, after being deported from Cobh as an undesirable, he spent ten years in a French asylum. His Irish trip is generally regarded as "The beginning of the end" for this once-great man.
Here Lies combines superbly skilled and atmospheric camera work with a masterful performance by Olwen Fouere (utterly convincing in her role as the dissembling Artaud) and a compelling sound track by Doyle. The result is an intense and at times eerie recreation of Artaud's confinement and the escalation of his paranoia and distress.
In this fantastic new version, the earlier film expanded and intensified through a jagged choreography of sound, image and action, to communicate the extremes and dualities that can beset the creative mind.
Don't miss it!
