With over a thousand members specialising mainly in organic & fairtrade food, The Dublin Food Co-op provides a genuine alternative to commercial profit-oriented businesses - using surplus fund to reduce prices and benfit ALL Co-op members.
Originally established to save money for members by buying organic and wholefoods in bulk, the co-op was set up in 1983 by a group of friends involved in the campaign to stop the Government building a nuclear power station at Carnsore Point in Wexford.
As much as possible, all the Co-op's vegetables organically grown in Ireland by certified organic growers and a small number of processed food products - such as flour, oat flakes, pasta, sea vegetables and some biscuits - are also sourced in Ireland.
In cases of crop failure or poor harvest, these products may be imported - but always from countries that uphold basic human rights (the Co-op also carries Fair Trade tea, coffee, chocolate and dried fruit snacks). Similarly, the Co-op's product range of beans, grains, dried fruit, oils and juices are ethically sourced and imported from certified organic suppliers.
So pop in and enjoy ethical, organic, affordable and delicious food just stone's throw from St. Patrick's Cathedral. If you become a regular customer - you might even want to consider joining them youself! Members pay a yearly subscription of €20 and you can pick up a form at the membership desk in the main hall. There is a 50% discount if you're unwaged, a student or a pensioner. The fee is reduced also if you join late in the year.
