Throughout 2008, the National Library of Ireland plays host to an intriguing and exciting exhibition of manuscripts, genealogies and much more, to tell the little-known (and intriguing) story of Irish migration into mainland Europe.

While most people in Ireland are familiar with famous incidences of Irish migration, such as the flight of the Earls in 1607, or the mass exodous to "The New World" during the Famine of 1847 - 1849, not so many are aware of the 200 year long pattern of migration to Europe following the wars at the end of the 16th century. Some these migrants had highly successful and illustrious careers; others weren't so lucky.

To tell their story, and celebrate the 400th anniversary of The Flight of the Earls, the National Library has assembled images from museums, galleries and archives all over Europe. Original treasures are also on display, among them the precious original manuscript of Tadhg Ó Cianáin's diary of The Flight of the Earls, together with genealogies, coats of arms and some of the earliest Irish language books.

In an increasingly international Ireland, this is a truly timely exhibition - don't miss it!
